Welcome to the Visual Discovery of India

Discovery New

Some of the most revealing stories about India today are hidden in plain sight—in government surveys, academic reports, private studies, and international databases. But being available isn’t the same as being accessible.

Datasets are often so dry, dense, or fragmented that it takes the endurance of a camel and the patience of a saint to find the right data, clean it, visualise it, and build compelling stories around it. Try glancing at Bihar’s caste census or the Periodic Labour Force Survey—two reports dealing with India’s most urgent problems, caste and jobs. You’ll quickly see why the camel-and-saint metaphor is no exaggeration.

Never before have we had so much data—and such urgent need to make sense of it. We are flooded with numbers, but starved of insight.

That is what 100 Ways to See India tries to address: turning the raw, the dull, and the overlooked into what we call idea graphs—charts that don’t just inform, but make you pause, think, and say, “I didn’t know that.”

In the full preface, we explore five simple ideas:

  • Data is abundant, meaning is scarce
  • Data is easy to understand—and misunderstand
  • Facts don’t take sides, but they can be made to look like they do
  • Charts as the new paragraph
  • A living book: data is dynamic, so is this project

You’ll find the full essay in the book.
